Korean Air is planning a major modernisation of its JFK cargo terminal to strategically enhance services and operations on the US East CoastKorean Air is planning a major modernisation of its JFK cargo terminal to strategically enhance service quality, operational efficiency, and sustainability of its operations on the US East Coast. To realise this project, the airline has commissioned Lödige Industries, the global market leader in cargo terminal automation. Originally opened in December 2000, the terminal is one of the largest cargo facilities in the eastern US, with a total warehouse floor area of 17,065 m² and an annual handling capacity of 200,000 tons.

The comprehensive modernisation includes the introduction of a range of advanced automated systems designed to enhance productivity and strengthen industrial safety. A central feature of the upgrade is the installation of two fully automated Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs), enabling more efficient and higher-capacity ULD handling. In addition, fixed transfer vehicles will be removed and replaced with Cargo Pallet Movers for flexible ULD transport and improved space efficiency. A total of 14 workstations will also be replaced with modern models.

Enhancements to the Cool Chain facilities form another central element of the modernisation. This includes the construction of a new refrigerated warehouse as well as extensive upgrades to the existing temperature-controlled facilities. In the four current temperature-controlled warehouse areas, temperature controllers, roller conveyors, and shutters, among other components, will be renewed to ensure even greater reliability and efficiency.

“JFK is our gateway for cargo services along the East Coast and a key hub in our growing global network. By modernising the terminal with state-of-the-art automation technology, we are ensuring long-term efficiency, higher safety standards, and increased sustainability of our operations,” says Junho Choi, Regional Manager, Cargo Office in New York, Washington and Boston, at Korean Air Cargo.

“Korean Air Cargo is renowned worldwide for its high-quality cargo service. With the modernised terminal, all requirements are met to satisfy the highest customer demands at JFK for years to come. As the airport plays an increasingly important role in global commerce, the modernised cargo center will further strengthen the airline’s leading market position,” says Jonathan Hardy, Managing Director North America at Lödige Industries.
