Singapore to Launch World’s First Airport Testbed for CFM RISE Open Fan Engines

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), CFM International, and Airbus today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to position Singapore as the world’s first airport testing ground for CFM’s next-generation RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines) technologies, with a focus on Open Fan engine architecture. The collaboration aims to study the impact of Open Fan and other RISE technologies on airport operations, developing a global readiness framework for airframers, airports, and airlines. The MOU was signed at the 3rd Changi Aviation Summit. About the RISE Program The RISE program is CFM’s technology demonstration initiative to advance next-generation commercial aircraft engine technologies. Its innovative Open Fan architecture removes the traditional engine casing, allowing for a larger fan size with reduced drag. Key benefits of the RISE program include: Over 20% fuel efficiency improvement compared to current commercial engines Reduced emissions and lower noise levels Compatibility with future hybrid-electric systems Enhanced safety, durability, and operational efficiency The Open Fan engine is a cornerstone technology for the next generation of narrow-body commercial aircraft, targeting sustainable and efficient air travel. Objectives of the Singapore Testbed Under the MOU, CAAS, CFM, and Airbus will: Develop a comprehensive readiness framework Integrate Open Fan engines into existing airport operations Consider aircraft system and design adjustments, infrastructure modifications, operational procedures, safety standards, and regulatory compliance Leverage Singapore’s aviation ecosystem Share expertise on airport design, safety protocols, regulatory frameworks, and operational procedures Conduct operational trials Test RISE Open Fan engine demonstrators at Singapore Changi Airport or Seletar Airport Validate readiness framework and assess operational feasibility Leadership Comments Mr Han Kok Juan, Director-General, CAAS, said:“This partnership is testament to Singapore’s status as an integrated air hub with strong regulatory expertise, allowing companies to test technologies and develop real-world protocols for global deployment.” Mr Gaël Méheust, CEO, CFM International, said:“This agreement is a huge boon for the CFM RISE program.
