Thales to upgrade radar systems in Taiwan

The ANWS in Taiwan has selected Thales to replace three airport surveillance systems in Taitung, Hualien, and Songshan with the STAR NG primary surveillance radars, combined with the RSM NG secondary radars. The upgrade will expand ANWS’s Air Traffic Control capacity by offering a wider range of capabilities and functions and bolster confidence in the safety and reliability of air travel. When delivered, eight out of 11 Air Traffic Control radars will be provided by Thales. Taiwan’s strong domestic air network relies on best-in-class technology to keep it ahead of the curve. With IATA predictions that domestic travel is tipped to reach 93 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2022, Thales is proud to be a trusted partner to ANWS in driving the safety and security of their civil aerospace. The new radar systems comprise Thales’ STAR NG primary surveillance radars co-mounted with Thales’ latest RSM NG secondary surveillance radars. This combination represents the latest in technical excellence and offers the highest levels of detection performance, reliability, and cybersecurity. Launched in March this year, the RSM NG is a 2-in-1 meta-sensor, with fully integrated Enhanced Mode S and ADS-B sensors, providing faster track initialisation and detection, with the latest in cybersecurity protection and permanent monitoring for optimised maintenance and life cycle costs. Thales will provide the radars, manage installation as well as provide factory and site training to ANWS staff for the maintenance and support of the radars and associated equipment. Upon completion of the project in 2024, Thales will be the leading provider of airport surveillance radar systems in Taiwan, supplying over 70 percent of ATC radars locally.
