QANTAS AND EMIRATES IN TALKS

Qantas has confirmed media reports that it is talking to Emirates on a potential codeshare alliance.

The carrier said in a statement to the Sydney Stock Exchange that it is in discussions with a number of airlines about potential alliances. “These airlines include Emirates, among others.”

A potential deal could see Qantas route European flights through Dubai instead of Singapore or Bangkok, with Qantas operating the Asian leg and Emirates providing its now extensive European network for the European leg. Emirates would potentially gain access to the Qantas domestic network.

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad was recently given the goahead to take a ten percent stake in rival Virgin Australia.
