Omni Taxi Aereo taps Honeywell for weather radar

Honeywell Aerospace announced that offshore helicopter operator Omni Taxi Aereo selected Honeywell Aerospace’s IntuVue RDR-7000 weather radar system to equip its entire fleet of 33 Leonardo AW139 helicopters. Omni operates approximately 88 helicopters worldwide, with the AW139 representing a significant portion of that fleet. “Safety is the foundation of everything we do at Omni, and that starts with giving our pilots the clearest possible picture of what’s ahead,” said Roberto Coimbra, CEO of Omni Taxi Aereo. “Upgrading our entire AW139 fleet with Honeywell Aerospace’s radar technology is an investment in our crews, our passengers and the long-term reliability of our operations. It reflects the kind of partnership we look for: one that helps us operate with confidence, mission after mission.” The RDR-7000 warns pilots of hazardous weather — including turbulence, hail, lightning and wind shear — by continuously scanning the atmosphere and building a real-time picture of conditions along the flight path. Independent testing has shown the system can help predict turbulence with up to 93% accuracy, giving pilots more time to adjust course and reduce the likelihood of a turbulence-related incident by more than half. “When it comes to offshore helicopter operations, it’s about giving pilots better information, sooner,” said Jose Vincius, senior regional sales manager, Honeywell Aerospace. “Omni’s decision to upgrade its entire AW139 fleet is a strong vote of confidence in what this technology can do for pilot situational awareness, mission reliability and the safety of everyone on board.” Because the RDR-7000 operates automatically — without requiring pilots to continually adjust settings mid-flight — it also reduces pilot workload during high-tempo operations, freeing crews to focus on the mission rather than managing the radar. Software features can be enabled remotely via an “over-the-air” update as they become available, helping keep Omni’s fleet current without additional downtime. For an operator running scheduled offshore missions on tight windows, that translates into fewer weather-related delays, higher aircraft availability and a more predictable maintenance schedule. The system’s 3D volumetric scanning approach also allows it to distinguish between overlapping storm systems — including weather hidden behind a closer storm front — giving pilots a more complete view than conventional radar, which typically scans only a portion of the sky. Under optimal conditions, the RDR-7000 can scan out to 320 nautical miles, though real-world detection range varies with atmospheric conditions and aircraft altitude.
