Magnetic Engines expands CFM56 repair capability

Magnetic Engines has expanded its CFM56 engine repair capabilities by introducing rotor balancing in-house, enabling the company to perform a wider range of repairs and module rebuilds while reducing reliance on external subcontractors. The investment includes both vertical and horizontal balancing machines, covering blades, discs, and spools across the CFM56 engine family. The investment significantly expands both the operational efficiency and commercial potential of the division. LPT Major Module rebuilds will now be available both for external clients and for Magnetic Engines’ own engine assets, creating a meaningful new commercial avenue alongside the operational improvements. The investment marks a significant step in the department’s capability development, removing a long-standing dependency on external subcontractors and opening up an entirely new tier of workscopes that were previously outside the division’s scope. Balancing is a mandatory requirement for every rotating engine module following performance restoration work or the replacement of life-limited parts. Without it, reassembled engines risk carrying unnecessary vibration into service. The process applies to all four major rotor assemblies of the CFM56: the low-pressure compressor, high-pressure compressor, high-pressure turbine, and low-pressure turbine. With both machines now operational, Magnetic Engines can offer full overhaul and rebuild of the LPT Major Module – a workscope that generates revenue comparable to a full engine repair – as well as overhaul and rebuild of the Fan and Booster Shop Module (SM21), and life-limited parts replacement on HPC and HPT rotors. These additions complement and extend the division’s existing Core Performance Restoration capability, which can now be performed with LLP replacement included. “This investment allows us to offer a broader range of repairs while keeping more of the process under our own control,” says Victoria Goodenough, Business Development Manager at Magnetic Engines. “For customers, that means fewer external interfaces, shorter turnaround times and access to workscopes that were previously unavailable through Magnetic Engines. It is another important step in strengthening our position as a comprehensive CFM56 support provider.” Until now, Magnetic Engines sent assembled engine rotors to partner facilities for balancing – adding time to every relevant workscope and, in some cases, making certain jobs impractical to take on. The multi-step balancing sequence required for the assembly of the LPT Major Module was one example where the subcontracting model created enough complexity that the work had to be declined entirely. Looking ahead, Magnetic Engines plans to extend balancing capability to LEAP engines as that programme develops within the division.
