Construction starts on new Ho Chi Minh City airport

Construction has started on the first phase of Long Thành International Airport in Đồng Nai province, Vietnam. The new airport will be located near Ho Chi Minh City and covers more than 5,580 hectares, The airport was approved by the government in November 2020. The government said the first phase of construction will cost about US$4.66 billion. The airport will feature a 4km runway, terminal, and associated services, and will be capable of serving 25 million passengers and handling 1.2 million tonnes of cargo on an annual basis. The airport is expected to start operating from 2025. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was quoted by Reuters as saying: “The construction of the airport is an important step to boost public investment and reduce the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy.” The government stated that the construction of the entire project, which is divided into three stages, will cost around US$16 billion.
