ATSB welcomes new aviation commissioner

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has welcomed James ‘Ossie’ Miller as its new Aviation Commissioner. Miller brings to the ATSB extensive aviation experience across the airline, military, general and recreational aviation sectors. His career includes senior operational and safety leadership positions with Qantas, including Fleet Captain B747 Flight Operations, and appointments as Acting Chief Pilot and Acting Head of Flight Operations. Throughout his career, Miller has developed deep expertise in aviation safety systems, occurrence investigation, risk management and organisational change. He has led multidisciplinary teams, chaired safety and operational committees, and contributed to complex operational decision-making in a global aviation environment. “Mr Miller’s broad industry perspective, collaborative leadership approach and commitment to independent, no-blame safety investigation will be a significant asset to the ATSB,” said ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell. “We look forward to welcoming Mr Miller to the ATSB and drawing on his experience, expertise and judgement in this important role.” Mitchell also took the opportunity to acknowledge and thank the service of Peter Wilson, whose three-term as an ATSB Commissioner concluded recently. “Peter’s depth of aviation expertise made invaluable contributions to a range of significant aviation investigations, and I have truly valued his guidance and counsel.” Mitchell was also named as ATSB Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer for a second five-year term. Mitchell was first appointed as ATSB Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer on 2 September 2021. “We are very pleased that Mr Mitchell will continue to lead the ATSB for a second five-year term. His reappointment provides continuity of leadership and strategic direction as the ATSB continues to strengthen its influence on transport safety in Australia and internationally through best-practice, independent safety investigation,” said ATSB Chief Operating Officer Colin McNamara.
