With international borders finally open and regular international flights reinstated, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) witnessed around 630,000 passenger movements. From 27 March to 27 April 2022, Mumbai Airport witnessed nearly 120 daily flight movements to 41 international destinations.
The first month witnessed a total of around 280,000 international passengers arriving and around 350,000 international passengers departing from CSMIA. Dubai as a destination scored the top position with approximately 162,000 passengers travelling in a month. While Abu Dhabi and Singapore, ranked second and third, witnessed high passenger traffic from CSMIA with 43,000 and 40,000 passenger movements respectively.
For the same time period, a total of 3,720 movements to the international routes was observed. IndiGo, Air India and Emirates emerged as the top airlines catering to the highest international passenger traffic to and from CSMIA. Pre-pandemic, of the total 51 international destinations which CSMIA catered to, 44.8 percent were Middle Eastern countries, 25.8 percent Asia-Pacific countries, 20 percent European countries, 5.9 percent to African countries and 3.5 percent America-based destinations.
CSMIA early announced a new summer schedule in March with approximately 5,000 weekly domestic and international flights. The new schedule is set to see an increase of 111 percent over the operating roster of FY21. CSMIA’s summer schedule is being planned to suit the growing traffic, with almost a 70 percent rise in the number of flights compared to approximately 418 daily traffic schedule of 2021.
