The number of travellers passing through Hong Kong International Airport has reached a new high, with 2012 setting new annual records in both passenger volume and flight movements.

Last year, HKIA welcomed 56.5 million passengers, up 4.7 percent on 2011 and handled 352,000 aircraft movements, an increase of 5.3 percent year-on-year, The Moodie Report reported.

According to Airport Authority Hong Kong chief executive Stanley Hui Hon-chung, increased arrivals came despite a “challenging global economic environment”, and dubbed growth to additional nine new airlines flying to the airport.

Looking ahead, Mr Hui expects Eurozone financial woes to impact growth but expects GDP growth from Chinese Mainland and South East Asia by 8.1 percent and 5.2 percent.
