In a significant development aimed at reinforcing its position as a global aviation hub, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on Thursday officially inaugurated its highly anticipated third runway. This milestone marks the completion of a key phase in the airport’s Three-Runway System (3RS) development, intended to boost capacity and advance Hong Kong’s role in world trade and travel.
The third runway, operational since mid-2022, has been progressively ramping up its activities over the past two years, culminating in the full integration of supporting infrastructure and advanced technological systems. The expansion effort, which began in 2016, is part of HKIA’s $18 billion overhaul intended to meet rising air traffic demands and accommodate up to 100 million passengers and nine million tonnes of cargo annually by 2030.
Chief Executive of the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), Fred Lam, highlighted this latest achievement during the inauguration ceremony held at the state-of-the-art new passenger concourse. “The completion of the third runway is not only a milestone for HKIA but also for Hong Kong as an international hub,” he remarked. “With this expansion, we are well-positioned to handle future growth and continue to offer seamless connections to a growing number of global destinations.”
The third runway itself is accompanied by extensive developments including a new passenger terminal, additional aprons, and new taxiways designed to optimise aircraft movement. These additions are supported by innovative technological systems aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. Notably, the new runway system integrates advanced air traffic control technology and improved safety measures, ensuring that HKIA remains at the cutting edge of aviation management.
The project is also a testament to sustainable development practices. A significant portion of the construction focus was on environmental conservation, including the creation of an expanded marine park.
