The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and Women in Aviation Singapore Chapter (WAI-SG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote aviation as a career for girls and young women and to develop the next generation of female aviation leaders. The MOU was signed by Han Kok Juan, Director-General, CAAS and Lou-Ann Seet, President of WAI-SG. Under the MOU, CAAS and WAI-SG will collaborate in the following areas:
- Co-develop and promote aviation-related discovery and experiential activities for girls and young women;
- Create platforms and resources for the purpose of educating girls and young women on the diversity of the aviation sector and its career opportunities;
- Create and provide opportunities for girls and young women to develop early interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and to pursue such careers in aviation; and
- Support opportunities for young women to build leadership capabilities, strong networks and professional relationships in the aviation sector, to contribute to the growth and development of the sector.
The Singapore aviation sector is expected to grow strongly in the coming decades, especially with the development of the Changi Airport Terminal Five which will increase Changi Airport’s current handling capacity of 90 million passengers a year, by another 50 million, when it is operational in the mid-2030s. This offers career opportunities for the next generation of Singaporeans including pilots, air traffic controllers, engineers and passenger service officers, as well as in new areas such as technology and sustainability. The partnership between CAAS and WAI-SG complements CAAS’ broad-based efforts to attract more Singaporeans to the aviation sector through targeted outreach to girls in schools and young women just starting out on their careers.
